Education and Freedom

The importance of education in every society is undeniable. One of the prime aspects of education is that it can bring freedom to break out of confines of mind. Since people in this profession, however, face a variety of restricting issues. It seems likely to manifest certain negative attitude when facing these issues: losing self-control, contempt, partiality, impatience.

Freedom also means to gain wisdom to exercise professionalism to maintain a healthy environment, take risks and more importantly willingness of mind and heart to learn. True education can enable people to see with a new perspective, as taught in 2 Timothy 3:14-15 and Psalm 25:4-5.

However, freedom in education can be attributed with two main components: (a) freely being able to gain wisdom, and (b) freedom in exercising admired human qualities which are found in the Bible as Fruit of the spirit as follows.

(a) The prayer to learn and to have a wise heart, what is seen in Old Testament: Solomon asked for wisdom from God (1 Kings 2:9), his fame spread when he asked for wisdom hence his success. Jesus said, ‘Seek first his [your heavenly Father’s] kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well’ (Matthew 6:33).

John Dewey attributed two elements to freedom in education, (i) access to the means to achieve dreams and (ii) ability to choose wisely once we have the means. According to this viewpoint, freedom can be realised when people are knowledgeable enough to make the right choices (Dewey, 1916).

William C. Ringenberg roots academic freedom in virtues such as honesty, humility, and love. This is a challenging issue, as exercising honesty and freedom of speech is challenged by other public bodies in some nations. In North Africa, for example, a professor of public health discovered that his country's infant mortality rate was higher than government figures indicated. He lost his job and was imprisoned.

In summary, in order to gain freedom from the challenges we face in education, we must incorporate the virtuous attributes of honesty, humility and love, pray to learn and to gain a wise heart.
