Free & Fit Challenge 2018 - Joy - By Faith and Fitness Co-Founder Colby Hanks

My name is Colby and I reside in Dallas, Texas. I am thankful to have been offered an invite to the early days of Free & Fit (and similar groups from which it evolved) in London, England, prior to moving back home to America in 2014. Cheers to all who have showed up to support and explore this community since its inception. I love seeing how F&F continues to inspire friends near and far in ways that are unique to each person. Today I wanted to share a bit about joy, one of the most sought after fruits of the spirit. Too often the thief comes to feed upon our joy, or to try and trade it for temporary pleasures, but I have found that discipline has helped me maintain my sense of joy by offering a glimpse of God's perspective, and weeding out the nonsense that chokes it to begin with. "Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright in heart." Psalm 97:11 It's no small wonder that disciple and discipline are such similar words. With time I've learned that I cannot force the fruits of the spirit. In seasons of my life when I am most disciplined, the fruits of the spirit seem to fall off the tree naturally. I must devote myself to regular prayer, study, giving and community and from that vine, the fruits grow and eventually blossom. Sometimes we get love or goodness. Sometimes it's peace or patience. But I've learned that God always provides fruit for the faithful. "Praise the Lord. Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments." Psalm 112:1 Moving meditation for me is a great time to listen and also to pray. I also meditate on scripture either whilst journaling at scattered times throughout the day. My "non-negotiables" in daily life include brushing my teeth, getting a least a few hours sleep (although ideally 7-8 hours), and daily movement. I do not confine myself to a certain period of time for exercise but I do try to give myself this time as early as possible within each day. I then move until I feel better. And I prefer to move in a combination of group class settings and also make time to be alone, outdoors whenever possible. A ride on my bike, a jog, a walk with a friend, and a yoga session are my go-to's. I occasionally listen to podcasts or books, but very rarely listen to music. I often ask God a dozen questions and get not a single answer, but somehow nature never fails to provide the perfect backdrop for indulging in God's peaceful assurance. "When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy." Psalm 94:19 (NIV)

Colby is a qualified Yoga Instructor and very recently celebrated her wedding! Congratulations Colby and may long your pursuit of joy continue to come through Sport and Scripture.
