Free & Fit Challenge: 40 Days and 40 Workouts

Free & Fit Challenge: 40 Days and 40 Workouts by Timothy Chew

A few friends of mine have asked me why do you do 40 Days and 40 Workouts Tim? So here is a brief blog and update to explain!

The first question I had was what does Lent even mean?

“Lent (Latin: Quadragesima: Fortieth) is a solemn religious observance in the Christian liturgical calendar that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends approximately six weeks later, 3 days before Easter Sunday or on Easter Sunday if you have feast days like me! (Source: Wikpedia)”

So why 40 Days ?

The origins and practice of Lent inspire me to be more aware, disciplined and active in my faith. Muslims and Jews pray and fast all the time due to religious celebrations and decisions and I often feel challenged by their prayers and fasting. So I guess I should challenge myself based on Jesus. Did he pray and fast? He did it once for 40 days and 40 nights after his Baptism. Matthew 4:1 says that Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to fast for forty days and nights. During that time of fasting, Jesus was repeatedly tempted by the devil. This testing time prepared Him for his three-year ministry. I am applying for seminary so if @freeandfitnyc is as good as Jesus ministry then that would be awesome!

So why 40 Workouts?

My own spiritual discipline is to study scripture whilst participating in sport. I see a lot of Christian groups play sport, meet together afterwards, complete different activities in fellowship and hang out and watch sport, but they don’t use sport alongside say for example Liturgy and Lunges. So I follow the Free and Fit Challenge.

The Free & Fit Challenge has been created to help individuals and groups, of all ages and abilities, to find freedom in a specific issue they are struggling with through sport and scirpture. Using the bible as a foundation, each document explores a specific topic through reading five verses, whilst exercising and then discussing five questions to help improve mental, social, physical and spiritual health and fitness.

Our Free & Fit group in New York may only be small, and our practice slightly different to that of some religious practices in the historical and modern world, but we all feel so much better after our workouts together. We all see the great value of using sport in a spiritual formation and its even better when we do it outside in the Lords creation.

So if you see me randomly working out and shouting scripture somewhere I am actually praying! Sometimes I sing and run to worship songs, walk and read scripture or stretch and meditate all of these practices help me!

So whether you just want to go for a walk in the park or if you want to exercise more rigerously there is a sport and spiritual formation for you! I hope The Free & Fit Challenge can help you too!
