Summer with the Psalms
Psalm 42 Friday 12th July
“As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him? Day and night I have only tears for food, while my enemies continually taunt me, saying, “Where is this God of yours?” My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration! Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you— even from distant Mount Hermon, the source of the Jordan, from the land of Mount Mizar. I hear the tumult of the raging seas as your waves and surging tides sweep over me. But each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life. “O God my rock,” I cry, “why have you forgotten me? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies?” Their taunts break my bones. They scoff, “Where is this God of yours?” Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!”
Psalms 42:1-11 NLT
Reflection on the Psalm
As we approach any situation or circumstance we need to build an awareness of our need to reconcile indifferences to the communities and context of where we live, serve and spend most of our time. This doesn’t necessarily mean we have done anything wrong, but it does mean we need to inwardly reflect upon how we are outwardly impacting the world around us.
As humans we have many mixed, complicated and difficult emotions and thats why it is important to name how we feel, not deny our emotions and build healthy relationships. This is why its so important to read our Bibles, pray and meditate daily on Gods word. Its why we can concurrently build relationship with God through each circumstance, challenge or obstacle we face and then reconcile the indifference to God. Through the depths of despair comes a reliance, repentant and righteous outlook towards our fellow man and the world we now see.
Lets not be shy and hide away from God in times of distress. Like the Psalmist lets surrender ourselves to God. In agreement, petition and prayer with the Psalmist lets petition heaven…”
I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!” In Jesus name. Amen.
Let us Pray…
Father God we thank you that you are the King of Kings, Lord of Lords and Holy of Holies. Help us this day and everyday to pursue your will in all we do in Jesus name. Amen
“So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord.”
