Prayer & Reflection:
One Saturday morning I took the bus to Manchester, we had one game, one opportunity and chance to survive. It was May 2012 and it was Queens Park Rangers versus Manchester City. If my time, QPR, won we would secure our Premier League status. If City won they would win the Premier League. It was the culmination of the English Premier League Football Season came to an end. It was a game to be remembered for years to come, but for most people not for my teams survival
The atmosphere was electric, high intensity fast paced and hugely controversial. We were through Cisse and were competing in the game at 1-1 when our highly unpredictable captain Joey Barton decided to lash out and make us even more vulnerable against the Champions elect and put us down to ten men. His red card, as QPR fans, we thought would cost us the game.
To me and every bodies surprise we took the lead with ten men through Jamie Mackie. As we approached the final whistle results in other games were going our way and mathematically we no longer needed 3 points to stay up. Enter Sergio Aguerro. With normal time complete at 90 minutes we started cheering scores around the ground. It distracted our players and as a result they lost concentration. We went level at 2-2 in the 92nd minute and them 3-2 down in the 95th.
We thought we lost everything and were going down. As it was we stayed up based on other results and we stayed to watch the Presentation of the Championship trophy as City fans sang to us “You are staying up” and we sang back “You are the Champions”. Unbelievable that despite defeat and being down to ten men that we stayed up and City even let our players do a lap of honor. A wonderful end of season for both teams.
For both teams throughout the game there was a time to weep and mourn, but for the Us as fans and all our team mates it was a time to laugh and time to dance. (Ecclesiastes 3:4)
When participating in sports its important for us to remember for what purpose is it that we compete, spectate or take part in any activity. When a match or a season comes to an end we rarely examine what is in our heart and mind, but rather where did our team finish and what was the score.
However, we often forget that the end and culmination of all things is near. Therefore, we must be sound-minded and self-controlled for the purpose of prayer staying balanced and focused on the things of God so that our communication will be clear, reasonable, specific and pleasing to Him. (1 Peter 4:7).
Come what May whether you are cheering for QPR or City its important that above all, we have fervent and unfailing love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins it overlooks unkindness and unselfishly seeks the best for others. (1 Peter 4:8).
So instead, at the end of sporting occasions let’s be kind, shake hands and be hospitable to one another without complaint. (1Peter 4:7-9) At the end let us not forget that we have fought the good and worthy and noble fight, we have finished the race, we have kept the faith firmly guarding the gospel against error.
For in the future there is reserved for us the [victor’s] crown of righteousness [for being right with God and doing right], which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to us on that [great] day—and not to us only, but also to all those who have loved and longed for and welcomed His appearing. (2 Timothy 4:7-8).
Let’s be a passionate and victorious sports team for the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
Let’s Pray…
Father God you are all that we need, help us to share the solution to other peoples problems through your Love and Generosity. Father be with us in all we do, be our interactions, be our reactions and be our emotions. Be with us all today and always in Jesus name. Amen
