Summer with the Psalms
Monday 17th June Psalm 17
“O Lord, hear my plea for justice. Listen to my cry for help. Pay attention to my prayer, for it comes from honest lips. Declare me innocent, for you see those who do right. You have tested my thoughts and examined my heart in the night. You have scrutinized me and found nothing wrong. I am determined not to sin in what I say. I have followed your commands, which keep me from following cruel and evil people. My steps have stayed on your path; I have not wavered from following you. I am praying to you because I know you will answer, O God. Bend down and listen as I pray. Show me your unfailing love in wonderful ways. By your mighty power you rescue those who seek refuge from their enemies. Guard me as you would guard your own eyes. Hide me in the shadow of your wings. Protect me from wicked people who attack me, from murderous enemies who surround me. They are without pity. Listen to their boasting! They track me down and surround me, watching for the chance to throw me to the ground. They are like hungry lions, eager to tear me apart— like young lions hiding in ambush. Arise, O Lord! Stand against them, and bring them to their knees! Rescue me from the wicked with your sword! By the power of your hand, O Lord, destroy those who look to this world for their reward. But satisfy the hunger of your treasured ones. May their children have plenty, leaving an inheritance for their descendants. Because I am righteous, I will see you. When I awake, I will see you face to face and be satisfied.”
Psalms 17:1-15 NLT
Pastor Tim’s Reflection
Today’s Psalm recognizes those who are righteous and the Psalmist petitions God for protection based on what the Psalmist feels he should benefit from and the great reward that he feels should to come to Him from our great God. Yet, do you feel guilty reading this Psalm? Does it make you feel as though something is not quite right?
The righteousness of God and the righteousness of man can be quite different. God is humble, eloquent and without blemish. As mere mortals our Psalmist identifies to me the pride in humanity. We have done this O Lord, please in response to our goodness and righteousness reward us! Can you relate? Have you ever had pride!
It’s the human way. We have been good so Lord you can do good for us! It doesn’t sit right with me….I am not sure about you, but I struggle to be this righteous, to be this good and certainly don’t feel great demanding these responses from God. Instead, I feel called to confess, to lament and to pray to God for forgiveness. Can you feel this sentiment of need for forgiveness? Do you also long to be righteous like the Psalmist? Our God can save, redeem and renew!
Thank God that we can be redeemed! That God is good and the he does Good! Our great redeemer is righteous, he is Holy and Jesus is all the things that this Psalmist claims to deserve. In fact, when Jesus cried out of the cross “Why have you forsaken me?” This Psalm reminds me of that.
It’s because humanity is not good that we need a God who is good, who can save and who can redeem. Praise God today that we too can be redeemed! Hallelujah Jesus!
Prayer
Father please forgive me for falling short of the Glory of God. For saying the wrong thing, for doing the wrong thing and for being wrong in many things. Help me to be saved, to be renewed and to be made Holy and Righteous in your image. Save me again today Lord and be My King of Kings and Lord of Lords! Thank you Jesus! In your name so we pray, in Jesus Holy and Righteous name! Amen
“So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord.”
