Summer with the Psalms
Thursday 20th June 2024

“In times of trouble, may the Lord answer your cry. May the name of the God of Jacob keep you safe from all harm. May he send you help from his sanctuary and strengthen you from Jerusalem. May he remember all your gifts and look favorably on your burnt offerings. May he grant your heart’s desires and make all your plans succeed. May we shout for joy when we hear of your victory and raise a victory banner in the name of our God. May the Lord answer all your prayers. Now I know that the Lord rescues his anointed king. He will answer him from his holy heaven and rescue him by his great power. Some nations boast of their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the Lord our God. Those nations will fall down and collapse, but we will rise up and stand firm. Give victory to our king, O Lord! Answer our cry for help.”
Psalms 20:1-9 NLT
Pastor Tim’s Reflection
What is in a name? Do you value the name you have been given since a child? Since coming to America I have sometimes borrowed my more American title as I adapt to my new life here in the United States. At just eight years old, December 2016 Liza and I moved, it’s important to be known, to feel welcome and a part of the culture you are in so sometimes people call me TJ (Timothy James) it’s a more affectionate name, one that some people can relate to more easily and personally I feel more at home with this name in the US. Names are distinguished and defined, but can be forgotten so easily.
What name do you call upon in your time of need? How do you respond in moments of desperation and whom do you turn to? Today’s Psalm reflects the author’s deep affinity for calling upon the name of the Lord. The name that is above every other name. The name to which every knee shall now. The name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
The Psalmist clearly understands that if he turns in a different direction there will be a different outcome to God answering his prayers. “Some nations boast of their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the Lord our God. Those nations will fall down and collapse, but we will rise up and stand firm (Psalm 20:7-8).
Often times we forget that God wants to help us, God wants to heal us and God wants to make us whole. Indeed, he is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, he is the God of Angel Armies and he is the God who saves you and I! Today place you can place your trust in the name of the Lord, everyday we should be looking to Him in all things & we should be trusting Him at all times in Jesus name! Amen
Prayer
Father help us to not get distracted by our own name, our own self righteousness or our own self pity that we may deny you. Help us instead Lord to put our trust in you and follow you everyday. We love you Lord and Praise your name! Thank you Jesus! It is in Jesus Christ name that we pray. Amen
“So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord.”
Lamentations 3:26 NLT
