Free & Fit Lenten Study - Week 5 - Community in Communion - Holy Communion in Faith & Fitness - by Tim Cheux

Jesus Saying for Week Five of Lent:

After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

— John 19:28

Prayer for the Week:

Cleanse me white as snow O God, remove me of anything that is displeasing to You O God. Renew my mind O Lord, my whole body please God, my every breath, and my soul, as I worship you O Lord and you alone O God. In Jesus name. Amen.

Verse for Reflection for the Week

Proverbs 8:17 NIV:

I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.

Psalm for the Week Psalm 91:

“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.

For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease.

He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings.

His faithful promises are your armor and protection.

Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day.

Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday.

Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you.

Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished.

If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home.

For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go.

They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.

You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!

The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name.

When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them.

I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭91:1-16‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Workout: for the Week:

Reflection for the Week:

The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name.” What a wonderful promise for us to cling to, to meditate on and to determine our outlook on the world we now see. To be present in our circumstances, despite their emotional impact on us, is such a gift that God offers to us.

In Psalm 91 we are able to sit, dwell and shelter ourselves in Gods love. To overcome difficulty and to develop a deeper understanding as a Son or Daughter of God in our everyday lives. Lets today fix our eyes on Jesus the author, protector and finisher of our faith.

Its time to sit with the promises of God and not get confused by our identity in today’s world. The Psalmist offers us this hope in Psalm 91. The Psalmist, quoting the voice of God, states that “When they (we) call on me (God), I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them.” Lets call on God through Prayer, pursue Christ in the Midst and be persistent gathering with one another around his word online and in person in Jesus name. Amen

Let us Pray…

Dear Lord please help us to overcome all things, to be persistent in our time of need and open to the new things you are doing in our lives and communities with patience and perseverance. Hold our hands, hold our hearts and help us be Holy in your sight in Jesus name. Amen

Question to Ponder this Week:

When may the opportunity arise for groups to bring the concepts of Faith and Fitness together in community?

Last year whilst preparing for Easter we partnered with the Faith and Fitness magazine to look at ways how people could receive Holy Communion at Easter. As a group four of us went to Central Park, worked out and took communion together expressing and experiencing Faith and Fitness as One. One Body of Believers, as One with Christ and at One with God through the breaking of Bread and shedding of Wineskins to Remember Christs Body Broken for us and Christs Blood shed for us in Jesus name.

We were able to experience the glory of Gods creation outside in Central Park and to exercise with the bodies we were freely given from our first breath. We exercised, contemplated and received both physically and spiritually the promises of eternal salvation through the process of receiving communion and running in community together. We all shared the experience as long distance runners or walkers and shared our love of Christ and community together so soon after the global pandemic. It was a real, relevant and renewing moment for us a friends in faith and fitness.

This Year Brad at Faith and Fitness is encouraging people to participate individually with the participation of taking communion where ever you are so you can be in fellowship with Christ. This is a great way to join together with a community of believers right where you are in your own home, gym or workout space to “Lift with Christ.” You can participate by following the Faith and Fitness magazine Instagram profile online and sharing your own moment of taking communion and sharing it with the online community. However, if like me you would like to take it together live and online. On Easter morning we will be taking communion at Dawn as part of our Holy Week Faith and Fitness as One curriculum.

In conclusion, it is possible to participate in Faith and Fitness as a community whether in person, online or even hybrid as part of a join project. We invite further thoughts and reflections on these ideas as we explore the Sports and Spirituality Intwined element of the deeper dive into our curriculum with team sports similar to our recent Faith and Fitness as One project in Inwood Manhattan with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Scripture for Communion & the Week

“And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. And the cup in like manner after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, even that which is poured out for you.”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭22:19-20‬ ‭ASV‬‬
