Free & Fit - Word, Worship & Workout - Blog Post Version - by Tim Cheux

Our third entry for the Free & Fit curriculum blog is entitled “Word, Worship & Workout”. The practical workout took place on Governors Island on Saturday 15th July with a fifteen minute cardio workout, meditation on Gods word and worship through spiritual practices and said prayers. Founder of Free & Fit Tim Cheux worked out with Vasyl Halabuda who was present in our Free & Fit Hoboken Tuesday evening sessions.

Our third session of our new 12-part curriculum took place with some bitter sweet celebrations of friends reuniting. Not only was it a celebration of Tim’s Birthday, it was the first time Tim and Vasyl had worked out together since March 2020 when the Covid 19 pandemic hit!


The session focused on Word, Worship & Workout. Gods sacred and Holy Word. The practice of Spiritual and Whole Holy Worship to our Lord God, the creator of the heavens and the earth. Finally, the practice of Working Out whilst reciting, meditating and remembering Gods Word whilst worshipping and working out.


We continued our practical study with our Sunday Sermon and Tim spoke about the impact of the verse 2 Timothy 1:7 on his life. The verse reads “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control]. 2 Timothy 1:7.” This verse has significance to Tim in the context of identifying a Spirit of fear not being from God and that fear was to do with punishment, but God’s love was to do with perfect love that casts out all fear.


The process by which we identify fear, to becoming fear-less, is helped through working out. Whilst respiring and sweating endorphins flow, perspiration releases tension and allows for the freedom and release of any distractions whilst stress is released individuals are able to draw back closer to God. Add to that the practice of said liturgical prayers, reciting scripture and devotional workout amd worship to the Lord and its possible to find the complete faith and fitness experience as one. When time is set apart to read Gods word, to Worship whilst Working out and meditating and relying on God responding with new revelations, fresh expressions of dialogue with God can open and renew ones faith whilst participating in fitness. The mission of Free & Fit is to build community through Sports, the Arts, Outreach and Service. Our motto and favourite bible verse is Galatians 5:1 which talks about Freedom in Christ.


It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery (Galatians 5:1).”


Christ came so that we may have freedom from all things, every challenge life throws our way, through Christ who strengthens me. In the workout from session three, we were able to freeze frame some pictures and to help visualize bringing Gods Word, our Worship and our Workout together as one. To display all three in visual imagery helps us in our minds bring together our pose, our posture and our positions in Worship and Workout to God as a time for for prayer.

In conclusion, instead of just going to the gym, walking aimlessly with your dog or cycling to escape reality try to bring a small or even a large passage of scripture with you to release the Holy Spirit into your Workout space. Instead of it being a secular lonely fitness emvironment, restore your faith in fitness by inviting the Holy Spirit into your place of Workout to Worship and read Gods word.
